Twelve: a series of performative koans

A koan is a paradoxical anecdote or riddle, used in Zen Buddhism to demonstrate the inadequacy of logical reasoning and to provoke enlightenment. In this case the koan acts as the mediator between the experience of mental illness and the inability to logically define its parameters.

This series of performances was made possible through a residency provided by 3Arts and Bodies of Work. The three larger performances, seen below, were made possible through the efforts and generosity of Steppenwolf Theater’s LookOut Series, The Poetry Foundation, and Victory Gardens’ Crip Slam. Thank you to each of them and their supporting staff for the success of this project.

Arrange a Studio Visit
